Preparing Your Heart for Sunday Mass • May 10, 2026

Sixth Sunday of Easter • Year A • Catholic Lectionary

1. Character Journey: The Disciples

Challenge: Jesus is preparing to leave. Fear and confusion fill the room. “How will we go on without him?”

Turning Point: Jesus promises another Advocate — the Holy Spirit — who will never leave them.

Transformation: Ordinary followers become courageous witnesses who carry Christ’s presence into the world.

2. Behind the Scrolls

In first-century Jerusalem, the disciples sat in an upper room, the scent of olive oil and bread still lingering from the Last Supper. Roman occupation pressed heavily on the city. Jewish followers of Jesus faced an uncertain future as their Teacher prepared them for His departure. The promise of the Holy Spirit was not abstract theology — it was the very breath of God coming to dwell within them, just as the Shekinah glory once filled the Temple.

3. Biblical Life Hack

Problem: Feeling spiritually lonely or uncertain about the future.
Biblical Solution: “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” (John 14:18)
Modern Application: When anxiety rises this week, pause and whisper, “Come, Holy Spirit.”
Challenge to Reader: Name one situation this week where you will intentionally invite the Holy Spirit to guide you.

4. Creative Spotlight: A Letter from the Upper Room

“Dear friends, He looked at each of us with such tenderness. ‘If you love me,’ He said, ‘you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate…’ We didn’t understand it then. But His eyes — they promised we would never be alone again.”
— Imagined reflection from John, the beloved disciple

5. Faith in Action

As you prepare for Mass this Sunday, carry the Gospel into your week. The same Spirit who strengthened the early Church is with you in traffic, in meetings, in quiet evenings at home. Look for one moment each day to be an “advocate” of kindness — a small act that reflects the love Jesus commands us to keep.

6. Soul Pause

Journaling Prompt: Where in my life right now do I most need the Holy Spirit’s comfort or courage?

Prayer: Come, Holy Spirit. Fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

7. Living Encounter

You are sitting in that upper room. The air is thick with the scent of warm bread and olive oil. Jesus’ voice is low, steady, full of love. His eyes meet yours. “If you love me,” He says gently, “keep my commandments. I will not leave you as orphans. I will come to you…”

You feel the weight of His words settle in your chest. Outside, the world continues — Roman soldiers march, merchants shout — but in this moment, heaven has drawn very near. The promise is yours. The Advocate is coming.
